Carmi is a peaceful town in Southeastern Illinois, near Interstate 64 and not far from some of the best recreation areas in the country for boating, fishing, hiking and outdoor activities. 

 

If you like to relax in nature, there are the campgrounds at Burrell Park, one of southern Illinois’ best, with plenty of inviting, shady trees and ponds well stocked for fishing.

 

The great thing about this small town is you get to break away from the chains. Carmi has a handful of locally owned and operated eateries, from diners to pizza.

 

Eating out in Carmi is traditionally a casual affair, and whether you choose the Main Street Diner, the Motel Coffee Shop (or as it’s known here, the Coffee Shop, or catch a dinner at one of the civic clubs or churches, you’re sure to find the closest you’re likely to come to home cooked meals. There are also alternative pizzerias, authentic Mexican fare at Tequilas and of course, a McDonalds for those looking for an old reliable choice. For those who love a good buffet, there’s Gottzz’s serving traditional midwestern lunches and dinners, and China Buffet for a touch of the Asian. Yesterday’s is a classic drive-in restaurant, another southern Illinois classic with a 1950’s theme, down to the original windows made with the same glass as soda pop bottles and car hops. They also do a booming catering business. And speaking of history, our Dairy Queen is one of the oldest in the country, recently expanded to allow for more people wishing to dine-in.

 

For those who don’t mind driving, New Harmony, Indiana is a half hour away, which is one of the most beautiful towns in the midwest and offers world class dining at the Red Geranium. And of course, Evansville, Indiana is about 45 minutes away with all the chains you could ever ask for.
